Keeping Community

Playing games with my family one of my favorite indoor past times these days. We’ve played every game in the house! Games are a perfect way to create connection in the home no matter what your age.

Our newest favorite is Labyrinth - it’s great for teaching kids strategy & spatial awareness. My personal favorite is Cover Your Assets because it’s adaptable to different time frames (quick round after breakfast - yes!) and fantastic for teaching math and strategy.

We’ve also loved the app House Party with my extended family who live far away. It’s like Zoom but way more fun!

It’s Game TimeI

My kids are constantly asking for snacks if I don’t feed them “real food.” What’s real food? It’s not processed. Sure, we allow for chips and crackers and the like, but those fast-burning carbohydrates have to be paired with protein and fat, otherwise little bellies don’t stay full.

So what’s on deck for the family snack? Tandoori chicken wings! Forget the high-fructose corn syrup barbecue sauce and try a yogurt-based marinade with the added zip of garam masala! Don’t wait until the next Super Bowl to dive in.

Ingredients

2 T unrefined coconut or avocado oil

6 medium garlic cloves, minced finely

1 T fresh ginger, grated

3 tsp garam masala

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp chili powder

1 c plain whole-milk plain yogurt (either cow, goat, coconut or other plant-based yogurt)

2 limes, juiced

1 lime, sliced into wedges

2 tsp coarse salt

3 lbs organic chicken wings or bone-in chicken thighs or breasts

Fresh cilantro and lime wedges for serving

Directions

1. Heat oil in small skillet over medium heat. Saute garlic and ginger for about a minute, until fragrant. Add remainder of spices and continue to cook for about a minute, until fragrant,.

2. Transfer spice mixture to bowl with yogurt, lime juice and salt.

3. Allow chicken to marinate at least 30 minutes, but preferable several hours, or overnight for most flavor.

4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake chicken for approximately 20 minutes, then flip over and bake again for 10-15 minutes more. Thermometer should read approximately 150 degrees at this point.

5. Increase oven temperature to broil. Broil both sides of chicken until golden brown. Thermometer should read approximately 165 degrees and juices run clear when chicken is done.

6. Plate chicken and serve with cilantro and lime wedges. Consider pairing with some mango salsa!

Enjoy!
